Up, Down, Left, Right: A Brief History

Robert J Finkel

The image of the arrow is nearly everywhere we look. It suggests and controls the movement of information, people, and machines. However, the use of the arrow as a symbol is believed to be less than four hundred years old. These booklets encapsulated a historical narrative about the arrow compiled from a a variety of sources. They were displayed on a table in the gallery and could be picked up and read alongside the work providing historical context to the other pieces in the show. They also doubled as a takeaway for visitors of the show.

Robert J. Finkel is a designer in the broadest and most specific sense of the word. He was born in 1980 and raised in Birmingham, Alabama. He attended Rhodes College in Memphis, Tennessee where he received a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology and Sociology concentrating in cultural anthropology and sociological theory. He is also a graduate of the Portfolio Center in Atlanta, Georgia. In 2011 he received a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Florida where he studied graphic design.
